Moorpark History | Moorpark Chamber of Commerce

Since 1915, the Moorpark Chamber of Commerce has been welcoming visitors, new business owners, families, and many others to the great City of Moorpark.

Moorpark has a very rich history that dates back to when the Chumash inhabited the land. There was even a Chumash village called Quimisac, which today is located at Happy Canyon Regional Park. It isn’t clear how long the Chumash lived in the land, but it was most likely for a few hundred years. Eventually, the area was part of the Rancho Simi land grant given in 1795 to the Pico brothers by Governor Diego de Borica of Alta California (under the guidance of the Emperor of Spain). Robert W. Poindexter, the secretary of the Simi Land and Water Company was given the land once the association was ended. In June of 1900, an application for a post office was submitted and approved (in August of that year), and a map showing the town’s site was created in November of 1900. By 1904, there was a railroad depot, and new inhabitants started to move into Moorpark.

Moorpark was also one of the first cities to run off commercial nuclear power in the entire world. This was back in the 1950s, and the nuclear power came from Rocketdyne – which was located in Canoga Park. Moorpark was chosen to have this kind of power funneled to it in part due to its close proximity to the San Fernando Valley, which back in the 1950s, was home to a number of aerospace corporations.

The City of Moorpark is modern, but we still have a small town feel. To learn more, please contact us at (805) 529-0322 or by email at info@MoorparkChamber.com.
